Yay we made it through our first week of HBOT and Torin did awesome!
His first trip in the chamber on Monday morning was going ok until he realized he needed to wear a mask on his face and he freaked out. I spent about 45 minutes out of a 1 hour dive holding the mask on him while he kicked, screamed and cried. It was heart breaking for me to watch him but it's neccessary. Monday afternoon actually went really well, I was nervous since our morning didn't go well but when we got in it he just put on his mask, layed down and started playing his leapster. Being able to bring in toys, video games and his DVD player has been a life saver for us.
Each day has gotten easier for us both and now when asked if he wants to go get in the "rocket" he gets really excited. Today he actually tried to get back in after our afternoon session was over.
We did not see any change on day one but by the end of day two we started to notice his behavior seemed different. I can't really explain what it was but it was good and he used 2 new words. On day 4 he answered some simple questions for the "1st" time! :) I held up his sock and asked "whats this" and he said and signed shoe, he did the same for his sock and a ball. During his afternoon treatment on day 4 we watched legions of the guardians and he said owl. Later that evening we were at my parents and he found a stuffed bat that looked like and owl and he picked it up and with a huge smile on his face said "owl...who who who". He has never really labeled objects on his own before he would only repeat what we asked him to. It's amazing to see him doing this on his own. Today was his 9th and 10th treatment and he triend to sing twinkle twinkle little star this morning!!!!!!! I cant believe how amazing these treatments are and how quick they are working. Tonight at dinner he was picking at his rice cheese sandwich and said cheese, then as he was rolling bits of it between his fingers and said ball and made a ton of little cheese balls. To top the night off as I was cutting the fat of my Roast Beef Torin looks at my plate and says ewww Mom! He had a completely disgusted look on his face, it was priceless!
HBOT works! Im seeing the changes in my son and in the children of the other women I have met this week. The biggest change I have seen this week is in Anthony a 10 yr old boy with Autism. He started treatments Monday also but is only going once a day. He is non verbal and as you can imagine that has got to be incredibly frustrating for him. He was a mess on Monday, stressed, frustrated, screaming and hitting but today is a different child. His change happened so fast and so dramatically. Just days after starting he tried to say bye to his teacher, hugged a woman at the center and left dancing out the door. He is an incredible young man with an incredible mother.
Torin has also made a little friend there named Alina. Today they hugged and he kissed her shoulder as they left...ahhhhhh. She is 4 and so similar to Torin in behavior. She is now doing her second round of HBOT and began talking after her first round. She is just the cutest little thing EVER!
